Woven pine needles - created during YATOO's Global Nomadic Art Project: Korea II, site: Molundae, South Korea, 2015.

"Encoded in our DNA, encoded in our blood
In the fingerprints of the rock
...and mirrored in the shadows at sunset
Lies the secrets of our ancestors
The lessons we need to heed
The age-old call of the wild
Written in the slate
Engraved in each grain of sand
The sun burning away the dirt
To leave only the long-forgotten language
Encoded in the sand
Encoded in the land
The language of the landscape
Of humans in harmony with nature
In rhythm. In dance. In blood-red of the sand."
Encoded reminds us of our ancestry, of who we are, of our place in nature and how we are meant to connect with it.

“God's fingerprint
This is the pattern I see behind
my eyelids
and when I look at a leaf
or perhaps just the ocean from afar
It's in my reflection, looking up at me from
the rippling water
It's in the veins of my hands, which I
don't know so well
It changes like the moon day by day,
but the cycle repeats.”
- from "God's fingerprint" by Emma, Durham, NC

Grab
"Grab"
Photo-documentation of land art - my handprint in Red mud
Created during the Global Nomadic Art Project: South Africa - "Stories of Rain"
Site: dam at Gecko Creek, Cederberg, South Africa, 2016.
Symbolic of the way we keep 'grabbing' minerals, wood, water and other natural resources from the Earth without replacing and replenishing, without supporting nature's regenerative qualities. My human hand becomes synonym for our damaged relationship to the land.

How did I take the photo?
Double-exposure with a SLR Pentax K-100 camera - completely done in-camera, I did not use Photoshop or any other image manipulation programme! Instead of taking one photo on a piece of the film, I take two photos over the same frame on the film (TIP for DIY: when doing this, double the ISO setting on the camera: if you're using 100 ISO film, then set the setting as 200 ISO).

Weggespoel
deur die gety se in-uit-vee
Uitgewis
deur die loop van tyd en gees
Herinnering
van ‘n oomblik op die strand
Fluistering
van ons lewe se kort bestaan
Tussenin
kan ons slegs hoop en bid
Rakelings
alles vir ‘n oomblik beter te verstaan
Weggespoel
is die bestaan van daardie oomblik
Uitgewis
deur die gety se in-uit-vee
‘n Herinnering
in ‘n foto, woorde en gedagte vasgevang
Simboliek
van ons kort aardslewensbestaan
– Janet Botes, 2016
Rough Translation:
Washed Away
By the tide’s in-out-sweep
Erased
by the march of time and spirit
Memory
of a moment on the beach
Whispering
of our live’s short existence
Inbetween
we can only hope and pray
Nearly-so
all for a moment clearer understood
Washed Away
is the existence of that moment
Erased
by the tide’s in-out-sweep
A memory
captured in a photo, words and thought
Symbolic
of our short earthly life-existence
